The Re-Tweet: Don’t Take The Easy Road

Did you know that, at one point, Twitter didn’t have an auto re-tweet button?  We used to have to copy and paste the tweet we wanted to re-tweet and add an “RT” to the front or at the end.  Let’s have a look at the difference between re-tweeting the traditional way versus hitting the quick auto re-tweet button.

When I am scrolling through my Mentions page, I can only see the first seven or so photos of those who have re-tweeted my Tweets.  If more than nine people re-tweeted me, I found out that many times I didn’t even know that it was happening! I found out by accident, actually—once I happened to scan a Twitter page, and noticed for the first time that the person had been re-tweeting me about ten times a day.
If the individual had re-tweeted me ten times by copy-and-pasting, I certainly would have not missed their re-tweets.  I don’t believe it would have been buried in the re-tweet and mention stream.

If you use the traditional re-tweet like the one above (#newpope), I will be able to scan it quickly and, if your comments are witty, that will prompt me to pop into your page and view your tweets and blog.
I generally copy and paste and type “RT” or “via” when I re-tweet people. When do I use the auto re-tweet button? Typically when people re-tweet my blog and leave a fun or attention-grabbing comment. Then I hit the auto re-tweet button to bring attention to my post and also in the hope of getting the re-tweeter more followers.
What is your style of re-tweeting? Do you use the auto re-tweet or do you copy-and-paste?

  1. Thank you for this tip I’m new to Twitter and trying hard to get noticed. I have not been very successful yet but I find that your tips are very helpful and you always put up the best stuff I’m definitely a fan!

Great advice! What do you think about hitting RT and then adding a fun comment in front? Should we do the manual format with a comment on the end…..
Thanks for the insight and liked the Cherry Blossom Tweet up Video too!

  3. I have always used the manual method to retweet , even if I don’t have a comment. I usually post from Hootsuite or Tweet-Caster which has an edit tweet function that automatically adds the RT

    1. Hello Kurtiss,

It is easier to hit that auto RT button but if you want someone to notice you, definitely not something I would recommend.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

      Best,
      Ann

  4. Ann, mostly (80%+) I paste & copy my RETWEETS. I also regularly push the RT button on your tweets to give my followers a break from my repeated avatar with your smiling face on my feed! REALLY!!

    1. Hi Borje,

Yes, changing up the avatar or user is a good thing. I try to find someone new to re-tweet each day. Thank you for your generous support.

      Ann

    2. Good post Ann,I always re-tweets if I like the Tweet & also people see who originally tweet the story eg source of the news, but ur post make me realise copy & paste is the best

  5. Good post. I typically use both depending on the length or topic. If short enough, I’ll add my own thoughts or sometimes I’ll try to shorten and call it a MRT (modified retweet). 🙂

    1. Hi John,

Some titles or quotes are so long; sometimes you just have to be creative with the abbreviation.

      Thank you,
      Ann

  6. I use both…. If the RT doen’t require any edit then Auto RT otherwise I use manual RT so that I can add my comment. I was using the manual RT only but later realized that it can be annoying to the other person if it doesn’t contain any comment from our side.

    1. Hello Mahesh,

It’s not necessary to leave comment. But it does help if one is creative with comment 🙂

      Thank you for stopping by.
      Ann

  7. I totally agree that as far as the RT is concerned the easier road is not necessarily the best. I hit the quote button, remove the inverted commas and colon, and add a RT at the start. This ensures a traditional retweet. When omitting parts of a tweet or adapting it slightly I make use of the via method.

  8. Hi Ann, generally I prefer to copy and paste. There are occasions if I am between work or in a rush but I really want to share with my followers where I’ll use the new RT, but I much rather do copy and paste and use “via”. It just looks much better to me.

  9. Ann, I never stopped to consider that I might be missing out on getting to engage with people I support or missing those who have supported me. Copy and paste.. the way to go in many situations!

  10. I agree with you Ann, I retweet using the old method as it generally gets seen by more people rather than using the ReTweet button on the Twitter website. Plus it will allow one to also add a comment before sending the tweet out which can equal to better engagement.

      1. I use the RT button for retweets because it services the original tweet best. Using manual RT’s forces my viewpoint/perspective into potential viewers. As an example, think of how you act when quoting someone outside of twitter. Would you make additional mentions on how you, personally, found the quote? Would you even try to contact the person that you were quoting to gain rapport?
