The song One Love resonates with me as my social media theme song especially in this YouTube video here, taken from the documentary “Playing For Change: Peace Through Music”. Here, the classic Bob Marley tune is played by Keb’ Mo’ and Manu Chao and the collaboration is truly inspiring.

In social media, we have a similar opportunity to connect with friends around the world. We tweet and share our photos, thoughts and adventures with people who may live on the other side of the globe. I’ve met some wonderful friends, first here on Twitter, and have transferred the friendships to other platforms and even some to real life meet-ups, conferences and trips. I feel that if we work together and participate in the movement for the better and tweet for change, it can be done.

I found proof that this is true just a few weeks ago. The Guardian UK posted an online article about how technology is coming up with innovative ways to help people and support development. Even in Rwanda, a country with a troubled past, Twitter is helping connect the people with their government to facilitate real change.

Whatever your passion or goal, I know that we can work together and make the change for the better collectively.

I asked eight other folks this question: What song captures the essence and energy of social media for you?

Just like in real life, social media gives us a choice: you can associate with selfish people only out for themselves, or, with selfless folks who are genuinely (and consistently) supportive. I hang out with the second group. Always. As Amy Jo Martin points out, “The use of “We” & “Us” vs. “I” & “Me” is an immediate indicator of a person’s intent in business & personal relationships.” My embrace of the “Us” and “We” greatly informs my song selection: “We Are Family” by the group Sister Sledge.

Years of likes, re-tweets, +1s, pins and countless gathering have shaped my perspective and approach to social media. I look at the medium from a family-centric point of view. I love connectivity, value diversity, and actively cultivate collaborative projects with people who are not clique-ish or snobbish. So “We Are Family” perfectly applies to what I do. Whether it’s “one nation under a groove” or “one world to the same beat”, it’s about having fun and being authentic as you explore the humanity of the online universe.

What I love most about social media is that it’s fun and exciting. I enjoy engaging and connecting with others. I also enjoy continuously growing and learning. There are a variety of different songs that inspire my social media approach, but one song stood out in my mind the most. It’s titled, “One More Time” by Daft Punk.

This song is very upbeat and every time I listen to it, I just want to get up and dance. It puts a smile on my face and reminds me that anything is possible. ‘One more’ try, ‘one more’ experience, ‘one more’ day, all leads to new possibilities in life’s journey. Oh yes, “one more tweet!”

My overall approach to social media is to simply engage, develop, grow and work with others. Social media has no limitations and neither does the power of an awesome, upbeat song.

The Jackson Five’s “ABC” is my social media theme song for 2013. This year I think we all need to get back to basics. You see “gurus” flaunting fancy tricks and theories for how to succeed on social that too often we forget the fundamentals—pick a niche, post consistently, engage and excite, follow to be followed. By sticking to the A-B-C’s of social I hope to have more conversations and make meaningful connections.

My social media journey began shortly after my high school reunion, in 2009. I decided I wanted to keep in touch with those old classmates, and what better way than the social channels? So, I joined Facebook…then Twitter. Social media platforms have come and gone, and I’ve probably tried them all, but Facebook and Twitter are the two I frequent the most.

A song that best describes my approach to social media? Well, I’ve been around for the heavy times, such as Trey Pennington’s suicide. And I’ve been around for the happier times, the recent birth of Matt and Annie Browne’s little baby boy, Sammy. Social media is Life personified; it has its ups and downs.

Connecting with interesting people from all over the world is an incredible experience. As a lifelong student, having access to so many different perspectives captures my imagination. I’m constantly sneaking peeks at Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram and Path. Of course, I can’t keep up with every post, but I love seeing the latest news and supporting my friends’ newest undertakings. Simply put, I don’t want to miss a thing!

Like the opening of this song, social media can seem like so much noise. For so many people, it can be hard to decipher who to listen to or, better yet, what to listen for. I have learned to make sense of it over time and hear all the incoming tweets, pics, videos, words, etc. as a symphony.

The song that captures the essence and energy of social media for me is “Nick of Time” by Moonalice. The song is deeply optimistic and includes the lyrics “Follow your dreams, don’t ever let them slip away. Good things happen in the nick of time.” It is a song of hope and also of those special friends who are there for you in the nick of time, just when you need them. The lyrics reflect my approach to social media which is to follow where serendipity leads, and on the way, not just connect the dots, but go to where the dots are going to be. As a result, friends who were at first virtual have become my best friends in real life, and my life immeasurably richer.
